Famous Handwritten BooksIn today’s world of computers, typing, and keyboards, it’s almost impossible to imagine entire books being pieced together from handwritten notes, but this happened quite a bit in the past. In fact, there are some very famous handwritten books. Some, like 1862’s Diary of George Bell: A Record of Captivity in a Federal Military Prison, are very rare books worth a lot of money. Other originally hand written books, however, are widely available at any library or store that has books for sale.
One originally handwritten book that almost everyone is familiar with is The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling, the famed author of the Harry Potter series. While Rowling writes all her books by hand first, this one is so famous because it sold for over four million dollars at a Sotheby’s auction. On the Road by Jack Kerouac was also originally handwritten, on a series of scrolls no doubt! In the past, handwriting practice was important to all writers, since only the rich and elite had access to keyboards and were able to type out their thoughts as quickly as they came into their heads.
Even in today’s world, where practice handwriting and teaching handwriting is often overlooked in the classroom, it is still wise to learn to write in print and cursive fonts. That’s because handwriting is an art form in itself, and many writers feel they are more creative, thoughtful, and diligent when they force themselves to write by hand. Also, looking at handwriting samples can be an accurate indication of one’s own mood, feelings while writing a particular piece, and even one’s personality type. Those who are interested in improving and learning from their own handwriting can start by trying out some cursive handwriting sheets. From there, it’s easy to play around with different styles and types of writing.
